Self-driving vehicles and ships are predicted to be one of the major future megatrends, because they promise to revolutionize a major world industry, which impacts every human on this planet. These changes include human mobility, logistics, and maritime solutions. Utilizing this disruption for creating value for users and corporations is of paramount interest.

However, this creates new challenges and hazards as well e.g. the current maritime logistical system is built up around the tacit assumption of a crew onboard that is at times assisted by pilots and VTS operators to prevent any possible accident scenarios. This system will be shook up by automated vessels that make decisions without the crew onboard and basing the decision e.g. on computer based algorithms.

Sauli Eloranta is in charge of innovation and technology of Rolls-Royce´s Marine business. He is based in Turku, Finland. Sauli acts as the Chairman of the One Sea Autonomous Maritime Ecosystem and he is a Board member of Waterborne Technology Platform, DIMECC Oy and Business Finland Digital Advisory Board. He is engaged in several initiatives on digitalising maritime operations through autonomy and artificial intelligence. Sauli has spent his entire career in Marine business in Finland, US, France and Norway.

Pentti Kujala is a professor of marine technology (safety) at the Aalto University, School of Engineering. He is the head of the Marine Technology research group and since May 2017 he has been also Vice Dean of the Impact and Innovation for the School of Engineering.  He has about 40 years of research experience related to design of marine structures and ships for open water and for ice.. He is chairing a new center of Excellence for Arctic shipping and operations (CEARCTIC) funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation 2013-2018. He has been working before e.g. at Lloyd´s Register of Shipping in London, VTT in Finland and Aker Yards in Finland. He got the degree of doctor of technology in Naval Architecture at Helsinki University of Technology on 1994. The main research interests have been devoted to the risk analysis of marine operations both in open water and in ice and development of innovative structural solutions for various types of ships. He has about 250 publications with about 1300 citations and Scopus H index 20.

Mikko Lepistö is globally responsible for the software and automation business at ABB’s Marine and Ports business. Mikko has held several global management positions within ABB in service, automation and software businesses. With his background in software, automation and system technology and experience from the marine business, Mikko’s role is to develop the next generation digital solutions and services to support the transition towards electric, digital and connected vessels. Mikko holds M.Sc in automation and control technology from Helsinki University of Technology.

Claudio Roncoli is Assistant Professor of Transportation Engineering at School of Engineering, Aalto University. He received his PhD degree from University of Genova, Italy, in 2013 and, before moving to Finland, he conducted research at Imperial College London, UK, and at Technical University of Crete, Greece. His research interests include real-time traffic management, modelling, optimisation, and control of traffic systems in the presence of connected and automated vehicles, as well as smart mobility and intelligent transportation systems.

Olli Lehtilä is a Senior Officer at the Data Department of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. His duties at the Data Business Unit focus on automated driving and robotics. He is currently gathering a broad analysis about the implementation of Government resolution on intelligent robotics and automation. He has also been one of the authors in operational programme that describes the current state of satellite navigation systems and how they are deployed in the different sectors of our society in Finland.

Yu Xiao is an assistant professor at Aalto University, Department of Communications and Networking. She is broadly interested in experimental systems research in the field of mobile computing. Her group develops novel applications of edge/fog computing, crowdsensing, and mobile cognitive assistance, solving the performance and scalability challenges these new applications pose to the cloud and network infrastructures.
